“Portrait of a Personality”
On 09/07/2024, the Garden Rural Library published an information dossier “Portrait of a Personality” dedicated to the 150th anniversary of one of the prominent figures of the Alash movement — Shaimerden Kosshygulov.
Goal: to introduce readers to the life and activities of the Kazakh public figure Sh. Kosshygulov.
Shaimerden Kosshygulov was born approximately 1869/1874 in the village of Kogam, Enbekshildersky district, Akmola region. Kazakh public figure, deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Empire of the 1st and 2nd convocations from the Akmola region.
He studied at the Nauan Khaziret madrasah, Bukhara madrasah. He studied at the Kokchetav and Peter and Paul madrassas.
In 1903, he was exiled to Siberia for distributing leaflets in the Kokchetav district against Russia’s colonial policy. In 1905, during the 1st Russian Revolution, he returned to his homeland. In January 1906, he was elected as a delegate to the 2nd All-Russian Congress of Muslims, also as a member of the commission for creating the party program.
In 1906-1907 he was elected deputy of the 1st State Duma from the Akmola region. Also in 1906, he took part in the 3rd All-Russian Congress of Muslims in Nizhny Novgorod, at which he was elected to the leadership. Participated in the creation of orders relating to the political sphere, study and religion.
At the congress he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Union of Russian Muslims. He was elected as a deputy of the 2nd State Duma, from the Muslim faction.
In 1907, he provided financial support to the Serke newspaper, which was published in St. Petersburg. He was involved in education, religion, and taught children.
In 1917-1919, Sh. Kosshygulov did not remain aloof from the Alash movement. Therefore, after the establishment of Soviet power, he was recognized as an enemy of communist ideology and was persecuted. In 1931, he was arrested by Soviet authorities, sentenced to 3 years and exiled.
In 1932, Shaimerden died near the Marianovka station near Omsk.
Rehabilitated on September 19, 1989 by the Kokchetav Regional Prosecutor’s Office, on the basis of the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated January 16, 1989.
